SOUTH NORWALK ELECTRIC AND WATER

South Norwalk Electric and Water (SNEW) is a municipal electric and water utility owned and operated by the Second Taxing District, Norwalk, Connecticut.  SNEW serves a population of approximately 45,000 people with water throughout Norwalk and surrounding areas and approximately 9,000 people with electric in South Norwalk.  The District also maintains parks and other public spaces in the South Norwalk community. 

LINEWORKER

EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, AND MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

1. High school, vocational trade school, or trade school diploma or GED. Successful completion of a 4/5-year apprenticeship program with mandatory on-the-job training at a recognized school, trade association or utility program and completion of certificate courses for cable splicing.
2. Maintains a current, valid CT Class Two License and Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class B (without restrictions E, G, or R).
3. Must live within 30 minutes commute to the utility.
4. Must have a thorough knowledge of the principles of electric theory as they apply to circuit and wiring and the ability to apply this knowledge to the responsibilities of a line worker.
5. Must have thorough knowledge of practices, materials, and equipment used in the sub-transmission and distribution system.
6. Must have practical knowledge of the employment of all tools and materials and of the strength of all materials used in line construction and the limitation of all tools and mechanical equipment used in the construction and maintenance of the transmission and distribution systems.
7. Must have ability to do required electrical work, working hot equipment and by using hot line tools.
8. Must be in good physical condition; have normal hearing and normal vision.
9. Must have ability to work indoors or outdoors, as assigned.
10. Must have the ability to work on overhead and underground electrical sub-transmission and distribution systems. Must have ability to work in standing po­sition for extended periods of time, ability to work for extended periods of time under conditions that require extreme care; climb poles or structures and perform required work off the ground on ladders, staging, bosun chair, etc., without being susceptible to dizziness; or be easily distracted, and act in a rational manner under emergency conditions.
11. Must cooperate and work efficiently with other employees.
12. Handles all contact with customers and the public in a respectful and courteous manner.
13. Must have a thorough knowledge of safety rules, and procedures, including rescue and resuscitation from electric shock.
14. Must have ability to glove voltages up to and including 15 kV.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs skilled tasks on sub-transmission and distribution system, as directed by the Electric Line Manager or Director of Electric Operations.
2. Performs overhead, underground, substation and field line work.
3. Maintains a high level of concern for safety issues and requirements.
4. Produces and reviews work orders with co-workers, giving consideration to work and safety issues/requirements.
5. Operates the Line Truck, Bucket Truck and the Digger Truck and other line equipment in a proper and safe manner.
6. Performs switching, grounding and other varied tasks according to standard departmental and industry practices.
7. Diagnoses, troubleshoots and repairs problems relating to primary and secondary service for the overhead and underground systems, including street lights.
8. Applies all work and safety standards associated with electric line work.
9. Knowledgeable in proper and safe procedures, to be employed when working on utility poles at various heights including ground man duties.
10. Installs, removes and maintains all types of equipment and materials used on the substation and sub-transmission and distribution systems, and makes any type of equipment connection required for transformers, re-closers, capacitors, lighting and other attachments.
11. Handles all contact with customers and the public in a respectful and courteous manner.
12. An Emergency Work Requirement and On-Call Duty, when assigned.
13. Attends and successfully completes all safety and job-related training both on site and at other locations, including overnight travel, as required.

Performs any other duties assigned by the Electric Line Manager, Director of Electric Operations and/or the General Manager, including working in another department under another job description, if required and qualified
